Intelligence Flashcards
the mental processes of thinking and knowing
cognition
the ability to learn, meet the requirements of an environment, and understand and control one’s mental activities
intelligence
the ability to understand and control one’s mental activites
metacognition
a method for determining whether certain items on a test correlate highly
factor analysis
The general factor of intelligence that contains all clusters of different intelligences. So a child who is smart in one area is smart is all others
g factor
When one distinct mental ability is tied to one factor. The overall g factor is effected by one s factor which is a specific intelligence.
s factor
Thurstone’s seven factors of intelligence
verbal comprhension, word fluency, numerical skill, spatial ability, associative memory, perceptual speed, reasoning
seven distinct mental abilities that are defined as the basic components of intelligence
primary mental abilities
There is no single, unified intelligence, but several that come from different parts of the brain
theory of multiple intelligences
Evidence/support for theory of multiple intelligences
savant syndrome, but the issue with this is that you cannot apply the abnormal to the norm. Evidence from the abnormal can only be applied to others with the abnormal.
The theory that intelligence is made of three components: internal, externa, and experimental
Triarchic theory of intelligence
The component of intelligence that relates to the aquirement of information (what is measured in school tests)
internal (analytic)
The component of intelligence that helps us interact with new external environments
External (creative)
The thinking that helps us adapt to the demands of the environament
Experimental (practical)
