Integumentary System 2 Key Concepts Flashcards
What is hair composed of?
keratinised dead cells
What secretes sebum?
sebaceous glands
what is the role of sebum secreted from the sebaceous glands?
lubricates the skin and hair and has some microbial activity
what do apocrine sweat glands produce?
‘milky’ secretions, which when combined with bacteria on the skin, it causes body odour

providing useful diagnostic information
What are the four stages of integument repair after injury?
- inflammation
- migration
- proliferation
- maturation
What does aging result in?
ageing results in the thinning of the skin, decrease in blood flow, decrease in cellular activity and repairs take place more slowly

they work together to maintain body temperature within a normal range
What does the dilation or constriction of blood vessels in skin help with?
cooling or warming the body
How do sweat glands allow the body to cool?
