Integumentary System Flashcards
Describe the structure + histological make up of the hair.
Made up of dead keratinized epidermal cells that are bonded together by proteins and has a shaft and root
Describe the structure + histological make up of the skin.
Epidermis - superficial layer, thin, epithelial tissues (4 layers)
Dermis - deep layer, thicker, connective tissue (5 layers)
Describe the structure + histological make up of the skin glands.
Sebaceous - most open into hair follicles, some directly onto the skin (ex. lips , genitals), release an oily substance called sebum (keeps hair from drying out, prevents water evaporation from skin, keeps skin soft and pliable and inhibits growth of some bacteria)
Sudoriferous (sweat) - release sweat into the hair follicles, or onto the skin surface
Describe the structure + histological make up of the nail.
Plates of tightly packed dead keratinized epidermal cells
Made up of nail body, root and nail matrix
What are the 5 functions of the integumentary system?
Protection - protects skin and underlying tissues, lipids released from lamellar glands, melanin absorbs harmful uv light, langerhans cells and macrophages assist in immunity.
Regulates - body temp
Eliminates waste - sweats
Helps make vitamin D
Cutaneous sensation - touch, pain and temp sensations
