what is the mass spectrometer used to find

A

used to identify different elements and find relative isotopic masses of elements

Q

describe ionization in mass spectrometer

A

atom (or molecule) ionized - knocking its electrons off to give positive charged ion. electron removed will cause bonds to break and molecules fragment

Q

describe acceleration in mass spectrometer

A

positive ions accelerated between a set of charged plates. the ions repelled by first plate and attracted to the second. a hole in the second plate allows the ions to exit into the next chamber all of them at the same kinetic energy

Q

describe deflection in mass spectrometer

A

ions deflected by a magnetic field according to their mass (the smaller mass to charge ratio, the smaller connected)

Q

describe detection in mass spectrometer

A

beam of positive ions pass through the machine and detected electronically

Q

what does infrared spectroscopy show

A

shows the different frequencies of bonds by showing if an alcohol is primary or secondary or it could show if its a carboxylic acid
