alkenes Flashcards
whats the general formula for alkenes
CnH2n
whats the definition of an unsaturated molecule
contains at least 1 double bond
define a stereoisomer
same molecular formula and structural formula but arranged differently
what is an electrophile
lone pair acceptors
what is an addition reaction
a reaction where 2 atoms combine without any other products
what is polymerization
turning single monomers into a polymer by causing a chain of repeating monomers
define what a pi bond is
pi bonds is where the p orbitals overlap sideways
define a sigma bond
sigma bonds are strongest covalent bonds, owing to the direct overlapping of the participating orbitals
ways to know if a molecule has E-Z isomerism
- if it has a double bond (restricts motion )
- two different groups on each carbon of the double bond
describe alkenes boiling points
alkenes has a slightly lower boiling point than alkanes as there is less electrons and therefore require less energy to overcome.
alkenes also have less bonds to break.
describe the solubility of alkenes
alkenes are non polar and are strongly covalently bonded therefore cant form hydrogen bonds with water molecules
how to test for alkenes (2 tests)
bromine water (orange to colorless)
potassium permanganate (purple to colorless)
in electrophilic addition why would one product be favored
the most surrounded carbon cation is more stable and therefore favored
