What are the eligibility requirements for an instrument rating?

A

Hold a pilot LICENSE which includes NIGHT flying PRIVILEGES for the license, for the appropriate CATEGORY of aircraft;
Have flight TIME experience ACCEPTABLE to the Director;
Successfully completed a ground training course in AIR LAW, NAVIGATION, METEOROLOGY, INSTRUMENT and NAVIGATION AIDS, and HUMAN FACTORS;
Successfully complete a flight training course conducted by appropriately QUALIFIED flight INSTRUCTOR comprising a MINIMUM of 10 hours of dual in the appropriate category of aircraft;
Have valid written EXAMINATION CREDIT that covers approved written examinations in subject areas above;
Successfully demonstrate to the director, by undertaking a FLIGHT TEST in appropriate AIRCRAFT OR an approved SYNTHETIC trainer the ability to COMPETENTLY perform PROCEDURES, MANOEUVRES and OPERATIONS

What are the conditions for the issue of an instrument rating?

A

The DIRECTOR is satisfied that an APPLICANT for an instrument rating has MET the REQUIREMENTS of rule 61.801 and it may be issued as an ENDORSEMENT on the applicants PILOT LICENSE;
A HOLDER of an instrument rating may APPLY to the DIRECTOR to have ADDITIONAL APPROACH AID or SYSTEM ENDORSED on their LICENSE;
On RECEIPT of APPLICATION and FEE the director may ENDORSE the ADDITIONAL APPROACH AID or SYSTEM on their LICENSE

What must a holder do to exercise the privileges of an instrument rating (limitations) in terms of single pilot operations, non-centreline thrust operations, approach procedures and medical requirements?

A

Single pilot: Have PASSED the FLIGHT EXAM (61.801) to the single pilot STANDARD;
Non-centreline thrust: Have PASSED the FLIGHT EXAM (61.801) IN a NON-CENTRELINE THRUST aeroplane;
Instrument approach: The holders LOGBOOK has been CERTIFIED by a flight EXAMINER where they have shown SATISFACTORY COMPETENCY of the TYPE of APPROACH AID or SYSTEM under IFR;
Medical: If the holder ONLY has a CLASS 2 medical, they MUST meet the CLASS 1 HEARING standards (part 67) and it MUST be ENDORSED on their MEDICAL

What are the currency requirements of an instrument rating

A

WITHIN the preceding 12 MONTHS:
- Demonstrate to a flight EXAMINER COMPETENCY in accordance with rule 61.801 for APPROPRIATE CATEGORY of aircraft and;
- The EXAMINER CERTIFIES the successful COMPLETION of check in pilots LOGBOOK in accordance with rule 61.129;
WITHIN the preceding 3 MONTHS:
- Either MET the REQUIREMENTS stated ABOVE OR COMPLETED 3 HOURS of instrument TIME, including AT LEAST 1 HOUR instrument FLIGHT TIME and;
- Carried out 3 PUBLISHED instrument APPROACH PROCEDURES, 1 may be in a SYNTHETIC trainer and;
- Carried out at least 1 SIMILAR TYPE APPROACH ie: PRECISION/NON-PRECISION;
If acting as PIC of a NON-CENTRELINE THRUST MULTI ENGINE under IFR must demonstrated competency for the 12 MONTH requirements in this type of ENGINE;
If carrying out INSTRUMENT APPROACH under IFR within PRECEDING 3 MONTHS, performed IN FLIGHT or IN SYNTHETIC TRAINER a PUBLISHED instrument APPROACH using SIMILAR TYPE NAVIGATION AID OR;
If conducting IFR under a PART 119 AIR OPERATOR CERTIFICATE satisfied IFR COMPETENCY in 121, 125, or 135

A

50 HOURS VFR CROSS-COUNTRY navigation as PIC, of which, NOT LESS than 10 HOURS are in APPROPRIATE CATEGORY of aircraft;
10 HOURS DUAL INSTRUMENT CROSS-COUNTRY flight time under IFR flight PLAN;
40 HOURS INSTRUMENT TIME;
20 HOURS INSTRUMENT FLIGHT TIME in that CATEGORY, of which AT LEAST 10 HOURS are DUAL INSTRUCTION;
OR:
When applicant for instrument rating is undertaking the TRAINING COURSE in conjunction its 200 HOUR CPL TRAINING COURSE by a TRAINING ORGANISATION under 141:
50 HOURS CROSS-COUNTRY flight time, which includes 20 HOURS TRAINING IAW CPL cross p-country NAVIGATION SYLLABUS and 10 HOURS DUAL INSTRUMENT CROSS-COUNTRY FLIGHT TIME under an IFR flight PLAN
40 HOURS INSTRUMENT TIME;
20 HOURS INSTRUMENT FLIGHT TIME in that CATEGORY, of which AT LEAST 10 HOURS are DUAL INSTRUCTION
