Q

Define a primary-means navigation system?

How is safety achieved?

A

A navigation system approved for a given operation or phase of flight that MUST MEET ACCURACY and INTEGRITY requirements, but NOT need full AVAILABILITY and CONTINUITY of service requirements.
Limiting flight to specific time periods, and through appropriate procedural restrictions

Q

Define a sole-means navigation system?

A

A navigation system approved for a given operation or phase of flight that must allow the aircraft to meet, for that operation or phase of flight, ALL FOUR navigation system performance requirements: ACCURACY, INTEGRITY, AVAILABILITY and CONTINUITY of service

Q

When can a PIC carry out an instrument approach procedure under IFR using a GPS receiver?

A

When it has been CERTIFIED in their logbook by a FLIGHT EXAMINER that they have satisfactorily demonstrated COMPETENCY in the use of that MAKE and MODEL of GPS receiver, including any FLIGHT MANAGEMENT system for a GPS instrument approach

Q

What set of conditions must be met for operating an aircraft under IFR using GPS as a primary means navigation system?

A

APPROVED to level 1 and ENDORSED on CAA form 2129;
Operate in accordance with the aircrafts FLIGHT MANUAL or FLIGHT MANUAL SUPPLEMENT ;
If operating within NZFIR, aircraft is EQUIPPED with 2 OPERABLE SOLE MEANS navigation systems for ATOs and 1 OPERABLE SOLE MEANS navigation system for NON-ATOs;
If using GPS BASED APPROACH procedure, a RAIM PREDICTION from either the ONBOARD GPS or from the HOLDER of an AIR TRAFFIC SERVICE organisation certificate (part 172);
EN-ROUTE and TERMINAL navigation is conducted using CURRENT DATA from the GPS DATABASE for the applicable route flown charts ensuring to CROSS CHECK;
All GPS INSTRUMENT approaches are accomplished in accordance with APPROVED INSTRUMENT approach procedures using GPS DATABASE which is CURRENT in respect to INSTRUMENT APPROACH CHART;
If RAIM WARNING is displayed for MORE THAN 10min or GPS equipment has operated in DR MODE for MORE THAN 1min, advise APPROPRIATE ATC service and VERIFY aircraft POSITION every 10 mins using OTHER IFR APPROVED NAVIGATION system;
Approach MUST NOT commence while RAIM WARNING is displayed;
If ALTERNATE is required, it is served by FULLY OPERATIONAL RADIO NAVIGATION aid with PROMULGATED INSTRUMENT approach based on other than GPS navigation and aircraft EQUIPPED with NAVIGATION EQUIPMENT capable of using that radio NAVIGATION AID

OPERATE in accordance with the aircraft FLIGHT MANUAL or FLIGHT MANUAL SUPPLEMENT;
All GPS INSTRUMENT approaches are accomplished in accordance with APPROVED INSTRUMENT approach procedures using GPS DATABASE which is CURRENT in respect to INSTRUMENT APPROACH CHART;

Q

What does RAIM stand for?

What does it do?

A

Receiver autonomous integrity monitoring;
The GOS receiver/processor DETECTS a POSITION ERROR that EXCEEDS the GPS position integrity PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS of the TSO for that phase of flight. Gives a VISUAL and/or AURAL WARNING when appropriate

An altitude ASSIGNED by appropriate ATC unit and INCLUDED in ATC CLEARANCE or;
For PUBLISHED ROUTES on en-route charts, area charts or AIPNZ volume 2 and 3, the LOWEST altitude selected from the IFR TABLE of CRUISING levels that is at or above the highest of:
The ROUTE minimum SAFE altitude (MSA);
A LIMITING minimum CROSSING altitude;
