Proprietary - The developer has hidden the source code so nobody can see it

Non-Proprietary - Software where the developer has made the source code available for anyone to inspect
(Ubuntu, Fedora)

What is an Operating System

A

System software on a computing device that manages hardware resources, utilities and user applications being ran on the system.

What is the 3 components of an OS

A

The Kernel - basic level control of hardware and assigns, writes and processes data between hardware components

The User Interface - how the user interact with the system and what they see.

Command Line Interface or CLI - users type commands to use the os, sometime called a CUI (Character User Interface)

A

Allows developers to write modular code for the system. Not all OS can talk to all applications.

Network - OS is installed onto a server requiring network to access

A

Peer to peer network- does not have a server managing it. Can share resources but each client OS is responsible for itself.

Client-Server Network - has a server with a NOS, managing all users and network resources.
