Inorganic Ions Flashcards
1
Q
Ions
A
- atoms that have an electric charge
- positive = cation
- negative = anion
2
Q
inorganic ions
A
- doesn’t contain carbon
- inorganic ions in the cytoplasm of cells and in the body fluids of organisms
- each have a specific role
3
Q
Iron Ions In Haemoglobin
A
- haemoglobin = large protien that carries O2 around the body
- made up of 4 dif polypeptide chains which each have Fe2+ in centre
- Fe2+that binds to O2 in haemoglobin
- when oxygen is bound Fe2+ temporarily becomes Fe3+ until oxygen released
4
Q
Hydrogen Ions
A
- pH calculated based on concentration of H+ in environment
- more H+ lower the pH
5
Q
Sodium Ions
A
- Glucose + AA need a bit of help crossing cell membranes which can be transported into a cell alongside Na+
- cotransporter
6
Q
Phosphate Ions
A
- PO4 3- attached top another molecule known as a phosphate group
- DNA, RNA + ATP contain phosphate groups
- bonds between phosphate groups that store energy in ATP
- phosphate groups in DNA + RNA allow nucleotides to join up to form polynucleotides
