Innate Immunity Flashcards
Features of innate immunity
First response
Non- specific
Mediated by natural barriers
Recognition of pathogens associated molecular patterns
Features of cytokines
Low molecular weight
secreted in WBC
Regulates intensity/duration - stimulating or inihibiting activation/proliferation/differentiation
Regulate secretion of antibodies
What are 2 types of cytokines?
Interferons
Interleukins
What is the role of interferons?
Limit the spread of viral infections
What is the role of interleukins?
Produced by T-cells/macrophages
Direct other cells to divide/differentiate
what are chemokines
small glycoproteins
potent leukocyte activation/chemotactic activity
What do CXC chemokines do?
Attract neutrophils
What do CC chemokines do?
Attract mono/lymphocytes + baso/eosinphils
What do C chemokine do?
Attract lymphocytes
What do C-X3-C chemokines do?
Induces adhesion and migration of leukocytes
What is the complement system?
26 proteins circulating the blood and bathing in the fluids surrounding tissues (INACTIVE FORM)
When is the complement system activated?
In response to recognition of molecular components of microorganisms
What is the complement cascade?
Binding of one protein will promote the binding of the next protein in a cascade
What are the functions of he complement system?
- makes bacteria more susceptible to phagocytosis
- directly lyses some bacteria and foreign cells
- produces chemotactic substances
- increase vascular permeability
- causes smooth muscle contraction promoting mast cell degranulation
