Innate immunity Flashcards
innate immunity
is the first line of defence, and responds to a broad range of microbes
traits of innate immunity
- rapid
- no memory is formed
- response is not stronger after being exposed
external innate imunity
- epithelia acts as a physical, chemical barrier with intraepithelial lymphocytes, and has flora. there is also the mucciliary part, and flushing out done by saliva, urine, tears
what is the blood differential test
it measures the percentage of each type of white blood cell you have in blood.
what are normal blood test results
neutrophils: 60-70%
lymphocytes: 20-30%
monocytes: 2-8%
esoinophils: 2-4%
basophils: 1%
function of monocytes
phagocytosis, inflammation, T cell activation, tissue repair
neutrophils
phagocytosis, inflammation
NK cells
killing infected or tumor cells
dendritic cells
phagocytosis, activation of naive T cells
mast cells
inflammation
esoinophils
defence against parasites
what is the role of phagocytes in innate immunity
- entry of pathogen
- recognition of pathogen
- phagocytosis and killing of pathogen
- induction of inflammation
- attraction of cells to infection site
- pathogen elimination or adaptive immunity activation
- tissue repair and remodling
