Innate Immunity Flashcards
What is the complement pathway made of?
20 serum proteins
What are the two activating pathways in the complement system?
Alternative pathway and MBL pathway
What initiates the alternative pathway?
Initiated by cell surface microbial constituents
What initiates the MBL pathway?
When MBL binds to mannose containing residues of proteins found on many microbes
Give an example of something that activates the MBL pathway?
Candida albicans
What complement proteins are responsible for recruitment of phagocytes?
C3a and C5a
What complement proteins are responsible for opsonisation of pathogens?
C3b - C4b
What complement proteins are used to kill pathogens?
C5-C9
Why might someone have reduced neutrophil function?
Chronic granulatomatous disease
Chadian-Higashi syndrome
Why do you get reduced neutrophil function in chronic granulomatous disease?
No respiratory burst
Why do you get decreased neutrophil function in chediak-higashi syndrome?
No phagolysosome formation
