Injury Prevention: Extrinsic factors Flashcards
extrinsic risk factors
from outside the body e.g. poor technique or training, incorrect kit or equipment
what are all the extrinsic factors?
- poor technique
- playing surface
- incorrect clothing footwear and equipment
- environmental factors
- safety hazards
- other players
- poor training programme
poor technique
- ↑ risk of chronic + acute due to repetitive and unnecessary strain on joints + muscles
- prevents production of optimal speed and power due to poor body positions
- e.g. incorrect cricket bowl causes lower back strain
poor training programme
- avoid training too often, long, and hard, and include adequate variety
- cause chronic pain, weakens other muscles, imbalance, so ↑ risk of acute injury
other players
- coach, players, and ref make sure all understand and play by rules
- emphasise sportsmanship, discourage violent behaviour
safety hazards
playing area should be free from obstructions with spectators well separated from the pitch, court or track e.g. fencing around a school with the correct distance
environment factors
consideration may include
- air pollution e.g. in Beijing
- weather e.g. risk of snow, rain, sleet
- temperature hypo/hyperthermia
- altitude e.g. hypoxic conditions
clothing, footwear, equipment
must be appropriate to age, size and standard of the athlete, and in good repair
e.g. cricket bat right length
hyperthermia
a state of elevated body temperature due to inefficient thermoregulation, body produces more heat than it dissipates
hypothermia
potentially dangerous drop in body temperature when the body loses more heat than it produces
DOMS
- delayed onset muscle soreness, also known as exercise induced muscle damage
- pain experienced after intense exercise due to microscopic tears in muscle fibres
- cause swelling and pain
