Chronic Injuries Flashcards
1
Q
chronic Injuries
A
- occur over a period of time
- slowly developed associated with continuous stress or overuse
2
Q
osteoarthritis
A
the degeneration of articular cartilage from the bone surfaces within a joint causing pain and restricted movement
3
Q
symptoms of chronic stress
A
- Pain when participating, swelling after each activity, small nagging aches in a specific area at rest
4
Q
stress fracture
A
- tiny cracks in the surface of a bone caused by overuse
- symptoms: swelling, pain when participating, nagging aches when at rest
5
Q
causes of stress fractures
A
repetitive stress on lower limbs, overtraining, intensity overload, unfamiliar surfaces, and inappropriate equipment
6
Q
shin splints
A
- medial tibial stress syndrome
- tendons connecting muscle to tibia attached on periosteum causing the connection to become inflamed
- symptoms: pain when participating, stiffness and tenderness in the morning
7
Q
tendinosis
A
- failed healing or repetitive trauma to a tendon
- deterioration of a tendons collagen in response to chronic overuse
8
Q
symptoms of tendinosis
A
burning, stinging, aching, stiffness and tenderness
9
Q
types of tendinosis
A
tennis elbow - lateral epicondylitis, golfers elbow - medial epicondylitis, runner’s knee
10
Q
bursitis
A
- inflammation of a bursa
- major bursae near large joints e.g. knee, shoulder, hips, elbow
- symptoms: pain during movement, swelling, caused by repetitive movement
11
Q
Bursa
A
closed, fluid-filled sacs work as a cushion and gliding surface to reduce friction
