Acute injuries Flashcards
1
Q
Acute injury
A
- a sudden injury associated with a traumatic event
- immediate pain, swelling, and loss of functions in that area
2
Q
chronic injury
A
a slowly developed injury associated with overuse and continuous stress on that area
3
Q
hard tissue injury
A
damage to the bone, joint, or cartilage, including fractures and dislocations
4
Q
soft tissue injury
A
damage to the skin, muscle, tendon or ligament, including tears, strains and sprains
5
Q
fracture
A
- a partial or complete break in the bone due to an excessive force that overcomes the bones potential to flex
- open: breaks through the skin, risk of infection
- closed: skin remains unbroken, little movement
6
Q
dislocation
A
- the displacement of one bone from another out of their original position
- from direct or indirect force
- symptom: pain at site, swelling, deformity, discoloration, inability to move
7
Q
subluxation
A
- partial dislocation causing damage to ligaments
- overstretched ligaments can be permanently lengthened
8
Q
contusion and haematoma
A
- ruptured blood vessels (c) leads to localised congealed bleeding (h)
- caused by a fall or direct impact
- symptoms: swelling, discolouration
9
Q
sprain
A
- overstretch or tear to the ligaments
- caused by sudden twist, impact, or fall - extreme range of motion
- degrees: 1st - few fibres 2nd - partial 3rd - rupture
- symptoms: pain at site, swelling, bruising, inability to bear weight
10
Q
strain
A
- overstretch/ tear to muscles and tendons
- overstretching or contracting too quickly
- grade1: minor damage, 2: more extensive, 3: complete rupture
- symptoms: pain, swelling, bruising, inability to bear weight
11
Q
Abrasions and lacerations
A
- superficial damage to skin scraping against a surface
- may contain dirt, may require cleaning + stitches
- symptoms: bleeding, stinging, infection
12
Q
Blisters
A
- separation of layers of skin, pocket of fluid forms due to friction
- preventable with correct equipment, training load and footwear
13
Q
concussion
A
- traumatic brain injury resulting in disturbance of brain function
- direct blows cause the brain to rebound of the inner walls of the skull
- symptoms: headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, nausea, seizures, fatigue, balance issues, confusion
14
Q
name all 10 Acute injuries
A
fracture, sprain, strain, contusion, haematoma, dislocation, abrasion, laceration, blisters, concussion
