Injury Prevention And Rehabilitation Flashcards
Dislocation
An injury caused when the normal position of a joint is altered. Dislocated joints are swollen, very painful and visibly out of place
Dislocation treatment
Manipulation to reposition bones, medicine, a splint or sling and rehabilitation. However, however it depends which joint is dislocated
Dislocation prevention
Wearing protective gear during sports helps to prevent dislocations
Sprains
One or more ligaments are stretched, twisted or torn. Sprains are caused by too much force being applied to a joint
Strains
When muscle fibres stretch or tear. Sprains often occur when muscle is stretched beyond its limit or is forced to contract too quickly.
Chronic injuries
Occur as a result of playing sport or exercising for a long time, pain when performing, dull ache at rest, swelling.
Achilles tendinitis
Caused by overuse of Achilles’ tendon, common in runners or ‘older athletes’
Stress fracture
Overuse injury rather than a mechanical injury. Muscle becomes stressed and transfers the stress to the bones causing a small crack.
Tennis elbow
Inflammation of the tendons of the elbow, caused by overuse of muscles in the forearm
