Arousal Flashcards
Arousal
Energised state, ready to perform
When is arousal present
Before, during and after sport
Drive theory
Initial motivation causes increased drive , more effort and more success
The dominant response
At high arousal we pick up less information and focus on dominant response
Inverted U theory
Increased arousal improves performance but only to a moderate level, after which more arousal causes performance to suffer
Personality - Introverts
Introverts perform best because at low arousal
they already have high adrenaline levels.
Personality - Extroverts
Extroverts perform best at high arousal as they can tolerate extra adrenaline.
Catastrophe theory
Increased arousal improves performance to a point but an intense combination of somatic (muscular tension, Increased HR) and cognitive (loss of concentration, fear about performance)anxieties causes a dramatic deterioration in performance.
Zone of optimal functioning
Area of controlled arousal and high level performance
Peak flow performance
Things flow effortlessly, A state of supreme confidence and, Remains calm under the utmost pressure
What disrupts peak flow
Poor mental preparation and the failure to reach optimal arousal levels, Environmental Influences- crowd pressure, refs decisions, Injury or fatigue
