injectable anesthetic agents (lect 6-8) Flashcards
laryngeal reflex abolished, no eyeball movement, sluggish palpebral reflex, corneal reflex
Stage III
pupils widely dilated
Stage IV
injectable anesthetics have to be unbound to
cross the BBB
most inj anx are highly protein bound
Amount of non-ionized drug depends on
pKa of drug
Accidental perivascular injection of Thiopental causes
skin sloughing, dilute with saline solution at injection site.
ALSO, Thiopental causes splenomegaly (blood engorgement)
Thiopental causes a dose dependent reduction of
CO, SV, and systemic vascular resistance
Transient vasodilation and reflex tachycardia, increases the incidence of arrhythmias
Thiopental in Greyhounds
defect in hepatic metabolic pathway
Extremely long recovery
Propofol decreases
ICP and CMRO2
How does proposal affect respiration
very respiratory depressant, especially if injected FAST
How does proposal affect CO and BP
causes reduced CO due to reduced contractility, reduces BP by vasodilation.
Propofol and Cats
CRI and repeated administration may cause Heinz body anemia due to oxidative damage to hemoglobin, and prolonged recovery due to limited ability to metabolize phenosis
Etomidate causes suppression of
adrenal steroidogenesis
Etomidate inhibits
cortisol and aldosterone synthesis
Etomidate is contraindicated in
pre-existing adrenocortical suppression
Dissociative anesthetic agents
Ketamine
Tiletamine
Phencyclidine (no longer used)
