Anesthesiology terminology Flashcards
Anesthesia
without sensation; lack of sensation
General Anesthesia (GA)
drug induced reversible state of
- loss of consciousness
- loss of sensation (analgesia)
- muscle relaxation (immobility)
- hyporeflexia
Surgical Anesthesia
level of GA adequate to perform sx.
Classical Anesthetic Drug
leads to unconsciousness, analgesia, immobility, and reduced reflexes
Balanced Anesthesia
Surgical anesthesia produced by 2 or more drugs or anesthetic techniques in order to achieve the best possible effects with minimal side effects
Sedation
CNS depression in which the Pt is awake but calm; ~tranquilization
Analgesia
Loss of sensitivity to pain
Hypnosis
Artificially induced sleep, from which the Pt can be aroused by sufficient stimulation (not so from GA)
Neuroleptananalgesia
hypnosis and an analgesia produced by the combo of a neuroleptic drug (e.g. Acepromazine) and and analgesic drug
Premedication
any drug that is given to Pt before anesthesia induction - usually to prepare Pt for induction of GA
Sedative
substance that induces sedation of tranquilization ; overdose or combo with other sedatives or strong analgesics may cause unconsciousness
Pain
definition by the Internal assoc. for the study of pain- pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience assoc with actual or potential tissue damage
veterinary med def- the inability to communicate verbally does not negate the possibility that an individual is experiencing pain and is in need of appropriate pain-relieving tx
Nociception
the neural process of encoding and processing noxious stimuli; so pain needs a conscious Pt whereas nociception also takes place in the unconscious pt if analgesia is not sufficient;
provides the optimal suppression of nociception
local anesthetic
Anesthetic
drug used to induce &/or maintain anesthesia; injectable or inhalational; Not all anesthetics induce unconsciousness, analgesia and muscle relaxation
