inhalational Anesthetic Agents Flashcards
prevent response to supramaximal stimulus in 50% of patients at STP
Minimum alveolar concentration (MAC)
Range:
Halothane (0.8-0.9)
Isoflurane (1.3 to 1.6)
Sevoflurane (2.3 -2.5)
Desflurane (7-10)
Order of Potency
Methoxy > Halothane > Isoflurane > Enflurane > Sevoflurane > Desflurane > N2O
Factors decreasing MAC
narcotics, sedative, analgesics, old age, hypothermia, hypotension, pregnancy (25-40%), severe hypoxemia, severe hypercapnia
_______ is best for mask induction
Sevoflurane
Second gas effect of N2O
it will accelerate initial uptake of an anesthetic gas given concomitantly
CV effect of Halothane
arrythmogenic
Compound A – sevoflurane degredation, occurs when
soda lime is dessicated or hot. Nephrotoxic in rats at high concentrations. Do not want to go below 2 L/min in O2 circle system
Malignant Hyperthermia
life threatening myopathy. Genetic defect, triggered by halothane, but possible with all anesthetic gases. Typically in humans and pigs. Treat with dantrolene
Halothane Hepatitis
hepatic necrosis and death. Immune mediated reaction, previous exposure to traces, rarely documented in animals
part of the US department of Justice, issues license to clinics/hospitals for controlled drugs
• Administration
Inproper or inaccurate drug keeping log
DEA may withdraw license to use controlled drugs, lead to investigation
