Obtain all available INFORMATION from comms asking questions if necessary

Discuss with your PARTNER roles and responsibilities at the scene

Plan your APPROACH to the scene Inform comms upon

List Arriving at Scene

A

Note and stop any VEHICLES leaving the scene

APPROACH the scene taking relevant equipment

Remember to MARK out a clear approach to the scene

PARK in a clear safe area

Locate your INFORMANT to obtain brief facts inluding offence location, ID victim and suspect/s and location of suspect

Maintain RADIO communication, if necessary provide SFP to comms

Identify any INTERFERENCE in the scene

Give comms a SITREP

Stop and take note of what is HAPPENING and where

Note your TIME of arrival and any other relevant factors

When victims show no sign of life

A

CORPSED

Call an ambulance and attempt resuscitation

Obtain confirmation of life extinct unless death is obvious

Record exhibits, body position, lividity, injuries and clothes

Establish persons (victims) ID

Sketch plan and take photographs

Early update to OC

Don’t move the body and record any previous movements

When the victims have been injured

A

FISH DPS

Administer FIRST aid and call ambulance

INJURIES - record and photograph

Treat the victim as a SCENE and don’t unnecessarily move the body

If the victim is taken to HOSPITAL police must accompany the victim and ascertain their current medical condition, preserve clothing, debrief relevant medical staff and update OC investigation

If the victim is expected to DIE consider taking their statement, whether signed by them or not. Should the victim die their statement may be admissable under S18(1) of the evidence act 2006

Conduct a PRELIMINARY interview

Take DNA SWABS from the victims skin if appropriate

Suspects

A

SUSPECT

Note the SUSPECTS demeanor, appearance and condition

Identify routes USED by the suspect to arrive and leave.

Consider SEARCHING the suspect if grounds exist under the Sns Act 2012.

Consider a PRELIMINARY interview where appropriate and return to the station a soon as possible

ENSURE to isolate the suspect from other people and ask them to remain.If they are unco-operative then consider arrest and caution

Note any COMMENTS made by the suspect

A

CONTROL

CLEAR the scene of all people and assemle them in a safe area and remain with them

ORDER witnesses and suspects to clear the area

Tell them NOT to discuss anything with each other

TAKE witnesses and suspect to station if willing

RIVALS are to be kept apart

OBTAIN full particulars and conduct preliminary interviews

Freeze, control, guard and preserve

A

Stop all movement to and from the scene

Remove all people from the scene ensuring they do not take anything or contaminate the scene

Establish boundaries with police tape and appoint a scene guard with clearly defined duties.

Complete a reconnaissance and appreciation of the scene to ensure the scene is preserved for the formal scene examination

Scene Guard Duties

A

MR SCENE GUARD MAINTAIN a register RECORD all movements in and out of the scene Prevent unauthorised entry to the SCENE COMMUNICATE relevant info to the OC scene or CSC ENSURE common approach path used NO discussion with bystanders, witnesses or members of the media ENSURE there is no disturbance of the scene GUARD and protect the scene from animals USE tact and curtosey when dealing with civilians and crowds ADVISE OC of actions taken RELIEF scene guard must be briefed on all relevant matters DUTY does not end until relieved by another scene guard
