Who do the ASAI procedures apply to?
Any person aged 17 or above at the time or reporting
What is the primary purpose of the medical examination?
well-being and safety of the victim
What do you tell the medical practitioner?
- When sexual assault believed to have occurred
- brief outline of events
- if relevant gender of doctor conducting examination
Important when debriefing a medical practitioner?
- any immediate needs of the victim?
- verbally summarise exhibits and their importance to investigation
- ID forensic items needing urgent ESR analysis
- ID injuries that should be photographed
- ID any disclosure made by victim during medical examination
What information should you feed back to the victim?
- Specialist support services available to them
- info on police investigation process
- expectations of timings of each stage including inital action, formal interview, subsequent court process
- clarify if they wish to make a formal complaint or not
What are some post preliminary interview considerations?
-Reassess investigation so far and consider what further investigative procedures are appropriate
-Matters to consider including
‘public safety
‘securing fragile evidence
‘securing crime scene
‘ID and locate witnesses
‘detecting/apprehending suspect
What are the ASA timing catagories?
Acute - 1 to 7 days
non-acute 7 - 6 months
historic - more than 6 months
what is the purpose of the preliminary interview?
- brief outline of facts
- victim safety
- public safety
- urgent investigation needs
If the case is very recent what should you explain to the victim to refrain from doing until a medical examination has occurred
- eating or drinking
- going to the toilet
- washing and showering
- washing their hands
- biting their nails
- changing clothes
- smoking
- brushing or combing hair
- brushing teeth or rinsing mouth
If the offender is not known what is one was of preserving evidence in very recent cases?
Wrapping the victim in a sterile sheet to prevent cross contamination
