Inheritance/Genetic Disorders Flashcards
Who discovered heredity?
Gregor Mendel
A dominant allele is represented by…
capital letter
A recessive allele is represented by…
lower case letter
What is a punnett square?
Determines genotypes
How many alleles come from parents?
1 from mother and 1 from father
Is a dominant or recessive allele more powerful?
Dominant
What does heterozygous mean?
Two different alleles e.g. Mm
What does homozygous mean?
Same alleles e.g. MM
How is there a better chance of IVF being successful?
More than one egg is fertilised
What is the process of IVF in two points?
1) Before being implanted, it’s possible to remove a cell from each embryo
2) Genes are analysed which detects genetic disorders
What happens to the embryos with alleles?
Implanted into mother
What happens to the embryos with bad alleles?
Destroyed
3 reasons for embryo screening:
1) Stops people suffering
2) Most of embryos are destroyed anyway - only one is left healthy
3) Laws to stop people wanting babies for ‘desirable’ reasons e.g. blonde hair, blue eyes
3 reasons against embryo screening:
1) Expensive
2) Rejected embryos are destroyed which could have been potential human life
3) Prejudice - implies people with genetic problems are ‘undesirable’
