Anaerobic Respiration Flashcards
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration?
glucose → lactic acid (+energy)
What is the chemical equation for anaerobic respiration?
C6H12O6 → 2C3H6O3
What is anaerobic respiration?
Incomplete breakdown of glucose / respiration without oxygen
What is glucose from food sometimes stored as?
Glycogen
Why does the body endure anaerobic respiration instead of aerobic?
- Subject to long periods of vigorous activity
* Body can’t supply enough oxygen to muscles
What does the product of anaerobic respiration, lactic acid, do?
Builds up in the muscles, causing muscle fatigue
What does ‘muscle fatigue’ mean?
Muscles stop contracting efficiently
What is another downside of anaerobic respiration?
Doesn’t release as much energy as aerobic respiration
What is the oxygen debt?
Muscles repay the oxygen that didn’t get to muscles in time
How is the oxygen debt repaid?
Blood flows through muscles to remove lactic acid by oxidising it into carbon dioxide and water
