Hydroponics and Greenhouses Flashcards
What are hydroponics?
Plant system that doesn’t require soil
What do plants need to make protein?
Nitrogen
Name the main three similarities between hydroponics and greenhouses:
1) Increase rate of photosynthesis
2) Increase yield of crops/profits
3) Control temperature and carbon dioxide levels
What do greenhouses need to work efficiently?
Sunlight, temperature and carbon dioxide
What are the main differences between hydroponics and greenhouses?
Hydroponics more expensive No soil in hydroponics Hydroponics used where water is scarce Less land space required for hydroponics Hydroponics require more technology e.g. computer software and alarms for maintenance
What do hydroponics need to work efficiently?
Carbon dioxide, oxygen and nitrogen
What does a greenhouse need in the summer to ensure it doesn’t get too hot?
Shade and ventilation
In a greenhouse, why might it be better to install a paraffin heater rather than an electric heater?
Because paraffin burns, making carbon dioxide as a by product
Name three reasons why a greenhouse is an ideal environment for growing plants?
1) Temperature - trap the sun’s heat
2) Light - artificial light makes the plants grow
3) Carbon dioxide - paraffin heaters increase amount of CO2
