Inheritance Flashcards
Who is Gregor Mendel and why is he important?
- He discovered the basic principles of heredity
- Laid the mathematical foundation of the science of genetics
Heredity
Passing on characteristics from one generation to another.
Trait
Distinguished characteristic belonging to a person.
Hybrid
Offspring of two organisms of different species or varieties
Example: Mule
Gene
Unit of heredity transferred from a parent to offspring to determine some characteristic of the offspring.
Allele
Alternative form or versions of a gene.
Dominant
The stronger trait or gene.
Recessive
The trait that is expressed only when genotype is homozygous/weaker trait or gene
Gamete
Mature haploid male or female germ cell that is made for reproduction. (Sperm and egg)
Probability
How likely something is to happen.
Genotype
The genetic makeup of an organism and describes an organism’s complete set of genes. (Refers to the alleles, or variant forms of a gene, that are carried by an organism.)
