Infrastructure Planning Flashcards
This legislative authority allows local governments to delay/deny new developments without adequate, existing government services (water, sewer, roads, schools, fire, police).
Ensures new development does not adversley affect/burden existing development.
Helps manage the pace of growth by placing burden of infrastructure development on developers.
Should wrap into effective CIP.
Adequate Public Facilities Ordinance (APFO)
Practice of requiring infrasture be in place/available at a specified level prior to allowing new development to occur.
Required by the State of Florida.
Ex. track building permits to ensure sufficient infrastructure capacity.
Concurrency
Practice of using natural light, windows, and reflective surfaces to reduce energy bills and use less artificial lights.
Also practice of converting enclosed drainage systems to open/natural systems.
Daylighting
Water-based infrastructure.
Ex. stormwater management, bioretention systems, swales, resevoirs, rain gardens, wetlands, and waterways.
Blue Infrastructure
Contorls that filter out pollutants and prevent stormwater pollution by controlling it at the source.
Best Management Practices (BMPs)
Conversion of single-purpose/gray stormwater infrastructure (piped drainage and water treatment systems) and reducing/treating stormwater at its source.
Green Infrastructure
Range of topics related to access to telecommunications infrastructure.
Ensuring communities have broadband access.
Telecommunications Planning
Energy Sources Notes
62.7% US electricity generated by fossil fuels
20% nuclear
17% renweables
Solar energy measured kilowatt-hours/sq. meter for electricity production
Meausred as BTU (British thermal unit) for heat production.
May be ocmpeting interests (solar vs. tree protection)
Passive solar = orienting streets and buildings to take the most advantage of solar rays.
Wind turbines = 100’ tall +
Distributed Wind = small-scale, produced/used on-site. Up to 100kW
Utilty = large-scale
Planners should plan for setbacks, height, visuals, sound, and design.
Measure of thermal resistance (resistance to heat flow).
Higher _____ value = greater the insulation.
Minimum ______ value of 20 = standard for residential.
