What happened on the 16 June 1976
Soweto pupils gathered to march against the introduction of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction. They were met by large groups of policemen who ordered them to disperse. When they refused, the police used tear gas. Stones were thrown at the police who fired shots at the protesters in response (or the other way around). Police gave no verbal warning

- BC had an impact on the students. It was clear that they needed to resist the government which gave their protests more strength and energy.
- The protest had been planned by the schoolchildren and the youth. Previous protests were launched and supported by adults.
When and how did the government finally regain control
After months of violence and mainly using force. 700 black people had died and 6000 people had been arrested.
Why was there eventually a democratic reform
Because of years if unrest and agitation against the government’s racial policies.
How were the protests influenced by BC
There had been other protests, but none had lasted so long or been so determined. The government believed BC had a large role is the uprising.
