A

Soweto pupils gathered to march against the introduction of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction. They were met by large groups of policemen who ordered them to disperse. When they refused, the police used tear gas. Stones were thrown at the police who fired shots at the protesters in response (or the other way around). Police gave no verbal warning

  • The protest had been planned by the schoolchildren and the youth. Previous protests were launched and supported by adults.
