Contradictions Of Apartheid Flashcards
Why did apartheid start to collapse
Because of the contradictions of the economy in SA
What were the contradiction in the SA economy
- Demands of rapidly growing economy meant more black labour was needed. The old concept of surplus black labour didn’t make sense anymore. Many blacks were aware of the need for labour and started moving without being told to.
- It wasn’t possible to keep black people in their homeland
Why was it not possible to keep black people in their homelands
Homelands were not economically viable.
Comprised of only 13 % of the country
Most were spread out
Economically dependant on white SA government
What did SA depend on each other for
Employment. They needed integration to help the country move forward.
When were the pass laws intensified
When diamonds and gold were found. Black people were needed for labour, but were not allowed to become part of the community. They were made even stricter when gold and diamonds were being mined larger scale and with companies.
What were the pass laws designed by the NP like
They were more harsh. Black people needed a ‘dompas’ to live for any length f time in a white area (87% of country)
What would happen to someone if the didn’t have their ‘dompas’ on them
They would be deported to their homeland or their ethnic group
Why did the pass laws become expensive to enforce
Because people chose, or were forced to ignore them. Homelands were unable to provide employment and people from rural areas were flooding into urban areas to find jobs. The pass laws didn’t suit the modernising SA economy
What made ‘petty apartheid’ laws a problem
Necessary economic integration. Under P.W. Bothe the government moved away from them by allowing people of all races to use ‘international hotels’. They also removed separate entrances and abolished the prohibition of mixed marriages act and the immorality act.
When and how did trade unions change
They were initially only for whites, but they changed with the formation of FOSATU and the NUM
What happened to the new trade union
They became militant and engaged in strikes.
What group did FOSATU merge with
COSATU
