Inflammation & Healing 3 Flashcards
What is the histological appearance of plasma cells?
Oval shaped, nucleus at one end, purplish cytoplasm (a lot of RER), chromatin deposited around edges of nucleus (looks like a clock face)
What are germinal centres?
The site where plasma cells differentiate - in lymphoid tissues and in areas of chronic inflammation - cells in this area are larger and have a paler nucleus
What are the features of granulomatous inflammation?
Epitheliod macrophages (elongated nuclei) and multinucleate giant cells - occurs in certain infections e.g. TB, leprosy, syphilis - develops in response to persistent/non-degradable antigens
What are the roles of TNF and IL-1 in inflammation?
Locally have effects on vascular endothelium, leukocytes and fibroblasts, systemically have effects on fever, leukocytosis, acute-phase proteins, appetite, sleep
