What is slapped cheek syndrome?
5th disease/ Parvovirus B19
What are the complications of parvovirus B19
Aplasia, haemolysis and arthralgia
What does parvovirus typically look like?
‘Slapped cheek’ rash to face
Then lacy reticular rash to trunk
What population of people should avoid slapped cheek child?
Pregnant women- can lead to transient bone marrow aplasia in the fetus if infected
What are the commonest opportunistic infections presenting as AIDS?
Pneumocystis pneumonia
Oesophageal candidiasis
Disseminated CMV
Disseminated mycobacterium about complex (MAC)
Cryptococcal meningitis
Chronic cryptosporidium enteritis
What does PCP (pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia) look like on CXR?
Bilateral ground-glass shadowing
What is the treatment of PCP pneumonia
IV Co-trimoxazole and IV corticosteroids
RSV symptoms in summer + gastro symptoms suggests what?
Adenovirus
Unimmunised African child with greyish fibrous inflammatory exudates to oropharynx + unwell suggests what?
Diphtheriae
Give penicillin and anti-toxin
