Infectious Disease Flashcards
Bacteria
Simple, single celled micro-organism. Live in air, soil, food, and bodies.
Toxins
Some bacteria give of poisons. Ex. Food poisoning.
Virus
Smallest pathogen. 100 times smaller then bacteria.
Fungus
Organisms such as yeast, Molds, and Mushrooms. Grow in warm, dark, moist areas.
Protozoans
Larger and more complex then bacteria. They have the ability to move through fluids in search of food.
Skin
Serves as both physical and chemical barrirer against pathogens.
Mucous Membranes
Mouth, eyes, nose are covered by protective linings called mucous membranes. The mucus traps the pathogens and washes them away.
Digestive System
Chemicals in stomach and small intestine kills pathogens.
Killer T cells
Destroy an body that has been infected by a pathogen.
Helper T cells
Produce chemicals that stimulate other T cells and B cells to fight off infections.
B cells
Produce Antibodies
Antibodies
Are proteins that attach to the surface of pathogens or to the toxins produced by pathogens.
Immunizations
Injections that cause you immune to the diseases.
Vaccine
An injection that contains small amounts of dead or modified pathogens or their toxins.
