Process of breaking down foods.
Absorption
Process by which nutrients pass through the lining of the digestive system into you blood.
Mouth
Teeth tear up food
Saliva
Enzymes break down starches in foods.
Epiglottis
Flap of tissue that seals off the trachea.
Esophagus
Muscular opening connects pharynx to stomach.
Peristalsis
Muscle contraction pushes food down the esophagus.
Stomach
Muscle contract. Churn the food to help break it up.
Pepsin
An acid that breaks down carbs, protein, fat.
Small Intestine
Nutrients are absorbed. Also breaks down fats.
Liver
Produces bile that breaks down fats in the small intestine.
Bile
Produced in the liver.
Gallbladder
Excess bile not used is stored here.
Large Intestine
Pushes waste and excess water through the intestine.
Rectum
end of the large intestine.
