What are iatrogenic diseases?
Diseases that result from contract from a healthcare professional
What are features of healthcare associated infections?
Infections that originate in a hospital environment that occur after an initial incubation period of 72 hours
What are the sources of heathcare associated infections?
Medical personnel, patient flora, contaminated environments, blood borne pathogens, invasive procedures and nosocimial infections
How are medical personnel sources of healthcare associated infections?
Through direct skin to skin contact with staff or by ingestion/inhalation
How patient flora a source of healthcare associated infections?
Microorganisms that are routinely found in areas of the body exposed to the external environment.
How are contaminated environments sources of healthcare associated infections?
Infections introduced through hospital environment.
i.e. Contamination through food, air, instruments

Disease causing microorganisms that may be present in blood. (nosocomial)
i.e. (HVB) Hepatitis Virus, (HIV) Human Immunodeficiency Virus.

Procedures which include the insertion of needles, vascular catheters, endotracheal tubes and endoscope into the body which allows microbes to gain entrance into the body.

Infections acquired while receiving medical care in a hospital.
What are common nosocimial acquired infections?
UTI, respiratory infections and wound infections

Environment, therapeutic regimen, equiptment and contamination
