Q
which drugs are narrow spectrum penicillin (beta lactamase sensitive)
A
- phenoxymethylpenicillin
- penicilin G benzylpenicillin
2
Q
is narrow spectrum penicillin (beta lactamase sensitive) gastric acid safe?
A
- phenoxymethylpenicillin = gastric safe
- penicilin G benzylpenicillin = not gastric safe only parental route
3
Q
what are broad spectrum penicillin (beta lactamase sensitive)?
A
- amoxicilin
- co-amoxiclav (amox + clavulanic acid)
co-amox = beta lactamse resistant
4
Q
broad spectrum penicillin side effects
A
- diarrhoea
- maculopapular rashes commonly occur in pt = glandular fever x use broad spec in sore throats blindly
5
Q
which is drug is penicillinase resistant penicilin
A
flucloxacillin
6
Q
is flucloxacillin with or without food?
A
empty stomach = 1hr before food/ 2 hours after food
7
Q
what does flucloxacilin cause?
+ risk factors
A
- cholestastic jaundice + hepatitis = v rare but up to 2 MT POST TX
- risk factors include tx for more than 2wk and higher age
8

examples of antipseudomonal penicillin
A
- piperacillin (only available with) + tazobactam
- ticarcillin (only available with) + clavulanic acid
9
Q
s/e of penicillins
A
- enecephalopathy (fatal) x give intrathecathy
- true allergy rashes or anaphylactic
- not true allergy minor rashes, small, hot, itchy + con-confluent or rash after 72hr
- cross sens - x give cephlasporins
