Infection Control Flashcards
Asepsis
Absence of disease producing microorganism called pathogen
“key word is pathogen” (as a bacterium or virus) of disease.
Medical Asepsis (also called clean technique)
Refers to the practice that helps to reduce the number and hinder the transfer of disease producing microorganisms
Surgical Asepsis
Practice that renders and keeps objects and areas free from all microorganisms
Contamination
Process by which something is rendered unclean or unsterile
Disinfection
process by which pathogenic organisms, but generally spores are destroyed
Antiseptic
stops the growth of bacteria
Sterilization
process by which all microorganisms are destroyed
The most common means by which an infection are spread is by?
Direct Contact
Standard Precautions
- Universal precaution
- Desihned to prevent the transmission of HIV, hepatitis, and other pathogens that are spread through contact with body fluid
- Requires the use of protective barriers
- Gloves, aprons, masks, and protective eyewear
Hospital Isolation (Strict Isolation)
- Designed to prevent transmission of highly contagious infection that can spread by (air or contact)
- Contaminated articles from the room should be labeled and bagged
- Gowns, mask, gloves, hand washing after leaving
Reverse Isolation
- Designed to protect immunosuppressed pt from infection
- Pt should be isolated with minimum dust, dirt, and wet areas
- STERILE GLOVE, gown, mask, hand washing after leaving room
Respiratory Isolation
- Designed to prevent transmission infection through the air
* Pt in negative pressure and isolated air-flow room
