Factors of UTI
- age (elderly)
- reduced mobility after surgery or prolonged bed rest
- prolonged use of urinary catheters
- pregnancy
- UT blockages eg. kidney stones
In upper UTI, parts affected are:
ureters & kidneys
S&S of upper UTI
- pain and tenderness in the upper back and sides
- chills
- fever
- nausea
- vomiting
Antibiotic options for upper UTI
Start with IV, followed by PO
Treatment duration of upper UTI
7-14 days
Upper UTI samples to send:
same as lower UTI, blood culture (septic)
S&S of lower UTI
- burning with urination
- increased urgency of urination
- bloody urine
- cloudy urine
- urine that looks like cola or tea
- strong odor urine
- pelvic pain in women
- rectal pain in men
Treatment duration of lower UTI
3-7 days (men require longer course than women)
Samples to send for lower UTI
- Mid stream urine culture
- Bag/ suprapubic urine (children)
- Catheter sample
