Infection by systems (CNS) Flashcards
Pro & con of a blood brain barrier
Pro: Protects CNS from pathogens and toxic substances
Con: Prevents entry of immunoglobulins, complement & antibiotics
Encephalitis def
infection of the cerebral cortex
Brain abscess def
Abscess of the cerebral cortex
Meningitis def
infection of the meninges
S&S of bacterial meningitis
- generalised headache
- neck stiffness
- abnormal mental state
- vomiting
- non blanching rash
Causes of meningitis

b. Neonates, pregnant women, immunocompromised:
c. Neonates:
a. Normal population: neisseria menigitidis, streptococcus pneumoniae
b. Neonates, pregnant women, immunocompromised: listeria monocytogenes
c. Neonates: group B strep
Management of bacterial meningitis
Perform lumbar puncture asap to obtain CSF specimen.
What is the most common route for invading the meninges?
Bacteraemia
Complications of bacterial meningitis
- high mortality
- brain damage
- hearing loss
Prevention of bacterial meningitis
vaccination against strep pneumoniae, haemophilus influenzae, N.meningitis
Cryptococcus neoformans meningitis tends to infect:
immunocompromised host, esp. HIV
Is Tuberculosis meningitis fatal if untreated?
Yes, fatal within 5-8 wks of onset if untreated
Causes of of viral encephalitis
HSV-1, HSV-2, mumps, measles, enterovirus, EBV, etc…
Microbiology lab diagnosis for viral encephalitis
CSF PCR
