infection Flashcards
what are protists?
Some are puristic, meaning they use human and animals as their host (live on and inside )
HIV
-Viral
symptoms-initially flew, then virus attacks immune system and leads to aids
How it spread : sexual contact, exchange of bloody fluids(blood)
Prevented: condoms, septic needles, use of antitrivial drugs
gonorrhoea
-Viral
symptoms: yellow/green discharge, pain urinating
How is it spread: unprotected sexual contact
Prevented: using contraception, condoms, antibiotics
What are fungi?
they can either be single sad or have a body made of hypase (thread like structure)
they can produce spores which can be spread onto other organisms
tobacco mosaic virus
-viral
symptoms: discolouration of leaves, can’t do photosynthesis on that part
how is it spread: contact between plants, insects act as vectors
Prevented: good field hygiene, pest control, growing TMV resistant strains
What are viruses?
very small
They move into cells and use the biochemistry to make many copies of itself
This leads to cell bursting and releasing all copies into bloodstream
The damage and destruction of the cells makes you feel ill
3 way infection is spread
Direct contact-touching surfaces, kissing
Buy water -drinking /coming into contact with water
by air -droplet(sneezing)
Rose black spot
-Fungal
Symptoms: purple/black spots, reduces area for photosynthesis, leaves turn yellow
How is it spread: the spars of the fungus are spread in water or wind
Prevented: using fungicides, stripping effected leaves
What are bacteria?
small
They multiply quickly through dividing for a process called binary fission
They produced toxins that can damage cells
Name four ways disease can be held by limiting spread of pathogens
improving hygiene
Reducing contact with individuals
Removing vectors -pesticides, insecticides and removing habitat
Vaccination
measles
-viral
symptoms: fever, red skin
LEADS TO:pneumonia,encephalitis
How is it spread: droplet
Prevented: vaccinations for young children
