Inertia, States Of Matter 2-2 Flashcards
Low and High inertia
A small pebble rolling down a hill has low inertia. A large Boulder rolling down a hill has high inertia.
Physical property
Information about matter that can be observed or measured without changing the matter’s identity.
Example: texture, color, volume, weight, height, Oder, magnetism, conductor of electricity, strength, flexibility, density.
State of matter
Solid, liquid, gas
Thermal conductivity
The rate at which a substance transfers heat. Plastic foam is a poor conductor.
Solubility
The ability of a substance to dissolve in another substance. Flavored drink mix dissolves into water.
Ductility
The ability to be pulled into a wire. Copper is often used to make wiring because it is ductile.
Malleability
The ability of a substance to be rolled or pounded into thin sheets. Aluminum can be rolled into sheets to make foil.
Inertia
The tendency of an object to resist a change in motion (a marbles inertia is to roll)
Mass is a measure of inertia. The more mass something has the harder it is to change its inertia. (A marble is easy to stop, it doesn’t have much mass, a boulder is hard to stop, it has a lot if mass)
