3-1 states Of Matter Flashcards
Solid
The state of matter that has a definite shape and volume. It contains closely packed particles that can move slightly (vibrations)
Liquid
State of matter that has a definite volume but takes the shape of its container. Particles close together but flow around each other. Move fast enough to overcome some attractions between particles.
Surface tension
A force that acts on the particles at the surface of a liquid. It brings water molecules together. Ex: the banana pepper jar
Viscosity
a liquid’s resistance to flow. Ex: honey, syrup
Gas
The state of matter that has no definite shape or volume.
States of matter
The physical forms in which a substance can exist. For example, water commonly exists in three states of matter: solid (ice), liquid (water), and gas (steam).
The three most familiar states of matter
The three most familiar states of matter are solid, liquid, and gas.
What is matter made of?
All matter is made of tiny particles called atoms and molecules that attract each other and move constantly.
Types of solids
Amorphous- not arranged in crystal shape. Ex: rubber, plastic, glass, wax
Crystalline- particles form a regular repeating pattern Ex: salt, ice, snow, iron, diamond. Has a distinct melting point.
