4-3 The Cell Cycle Flashcards
Mitosis
One copy of DNA goes to each of the two new daughter cells, has four parts (the point of mitosis is to duplicate the DNA)
Interphase
Cell grows to mature size, does normal life processes, copies it’s organelles & chromosomes, prepares to divide. (This is the longest phase)
Prophase
Chromosomes condense from long strands (chromatin) into rod-like structures; spindle fibers form between the centrioles; nuclear membrane breaks down. (First step of mitosis)
Metaphase
Metaphase (meet in middle) Paired chromatids (chromosomes) line up along the center of the cell and attach by their centromeres to spindle fibers. Nuclear membrane is dissolved. (Second step of mitosis)
Anaphase
Anaphase (Anna and her sister split)
The centromeres split and sister chromatids move to opposite ends of the cell; cell stretches out (third step of mitosis)
Telophase
Nuclear membranes reform around chromosomes; cell begins to pinch in the middle. (Fourth step of mitosis)
Cytokinesis
Cytokinesis (cyt-cytoplasm) (kinesis-move things)
Cytoplasm divides and organelles are divided between the two new daughter cells. In cells with a cell wall, a cell plate forms between the new cells.
