5-1 Mendel And His Peas Flashcards
Gregor Mendel
A monk who studied the inheritance of traits in pea plants. This took place in 1843, in Austria. Gregor was called the father of genetics because of his experiments.
Pollen
Tiny granules that contain the male sex cell of seed plants.
Eggs
A sex cell that is produced by the female
Ovule
Where the eggs are located in a flower
Pollination
The transfer of pollen from the male reproductive structures to the female structures of seed plants.
Self-pollinating plants
Have both male and female reproductive structures and can transfer its own pollen to its own ovule.
True breeding plant
Also called pure-bred. Always has offspring that looks like the parent (has the same trait)
Cross-pollination
Pollen from one plant fertilizes the ovule of a flower on a different plant.
Pollen carrying
Pollen can be carried by the wind or animals (birds, insect)
Characteristics
A feature that has different forms
Heredity
The passing of traits from parents to offspring
Traits
The different forms of a characteristic
Mendel’s first experiments
He studied seven different characteristics. He crossed true breeding (pure-bred) plants of one trait with true breeding plants of another trait. The offspring are called first generation. Ex: Purple x White flowers=always had purple flowers.
Dominate Trait
The trait that always appeared in each cross
Recessive trait
The trait that seemed to disappear. “Recede”-to back off
