5-2 Traits And inheritance Flashcards
Genes
The instructions for inherited traits
Alleles
Alleles are The different forms of a gene. Offspring have two alleles for every trait. They can be dominant (Capital letter) or recessive (lower case letter) example: Purple (P) flowers vs. White (p) flowers
Phenotype
Phenotype (physical)
Phenotype is how that characteristic looks in an organism. (Physical looks or characteristics)
Example: Purple or white
Genotype
Shows the combination of the alleles
Example: PP or pp-Homozygous (both alleles the same) [true-breeding]
Pp-Heterozygous (each allele is different)
Punnett Squares
Used to organize all the possible combinations of offspring from two parents. They show the probability (the mathematical chance that something will happen). Every event is independent of the event that came before it.
P-purple p-white Pp | Pp ----|---- Pp | Pp Phenotype: Genotype:
