Ineffective tissue perfusion Flashcards
Aneurysm
Causes?
Weaking of an artery wall
mainly aorta but could be cerebral, popliteal, mesenteric, plenic arteries
True aneurysm
Affects all 3 vessel layers
False aneurysm
Only affects inner layers
Exsanguination
Blood spills out of circulatory system
20% survival
Dyslipidemia
Definition:
High levels of lipids in the blood, which increases risk for chronic disease
LDLs are bad cholesterol
Good cholesterol?
HDLs: High density lipoproteins
Helps remove excess cholesterol
Dyslipidemia
Causes:
Primary (genetic)
Secondary (lifestyle)
Atherosclerosis
Chronic inflammatory disease triggered by a vessel wall injury and characterized by thickening/ hardening lesions calcifying the arterial wall, causing obstruction.
Manifestations of atherosclerosis
Asymptomatic until complications
(gradual: artery is 70% blocked when symptoms are noticed)
Treatment of atherosclerosis
- Angioplasty
- Bypass
- Laser procedure
- Atherectomy
- B complex vitamins
Peripheral vascular disease
Definition?
Narrowing of peripheral vessels
Peripheral vascular disease causes
- Atherosclerosis
- Thrombus
- Inflammation (thromboangitis obliterans aka berger disease)
- Vasospasm (Raynaud’s phenomenon)
Peripheral vascular disease manifestations
- Claudication (will see this first)
- thick toenails
Coronary artery disease
Definition
Narrowing/ blockage of arteries supplying the myocardium
Coronary artery disease
Obstruction
50%+
Coronary artery disease
NON-obstructive
<50%
Stable angina
Decreases with rest
Unstable angina
Constant
Prinzmetal angina
Vasospasm
Enough to cause chest pain
Silent
Asymptomatic
Diabetes/ neuropathy
Diagnosis of CAD
Troponin! Biomarker
Cardiac specific: if noted, indicates heart issue
Thrombus emboli
Blot clot composed of platelets, fibrin, erythrocytes, leukocytes
Embolus
portion or all of thrombus breaks loose, travels, and embeds in a smaller vessel
Virchow Triad
Endothelial injury/ circulatory stasis/ hypercoagulable state
Clot formation
