Induction Anesthesia Lecture (NEW STUDY THIS ONE) Flashcards
What kind of drugs are normally used for induction?
- Propofol
- Ketamine
- Tilemin
- Alfaxalone
- Etomidine
- Isoflourane/seroflourane
Discuss the different induction routes (for anesthesia)
- Intravenous
- intramuscular
- ## inhalation
Discuss the basics of propofol
- Sedation. and general anesthesia
- Hepatic (CY450) + extrahepatic metabolism
- Renal + extra renal excretion
- Short duration (10-20 min)
- NO ANALGESIC EFFECT
- dose dpendent effect on the Cv system
- If you use a benzodiazapene, to control sezing in a patient, then use propofol next
- in smalll animals, it can be used for induction of anesthesia or maintenace of anesthesia
- MORE PROFOUND HYPOVOLEMIC, GERIATRIC OR LV COMPRISED
Which receptoirs do induction drugs usually traget
also discuss the mechanism of action for propfol
the GABA-A rceptor
Mehcnaims of action: GABA-A agonist
Discuss the indications and contraindications of proprofol
Indications:
- healthy for dogs/cats
- Shjort procedures that need muscle relaxation
- Occasional myoclonic movement dogs
Seizure/brain trauma patients + refractory seizures
Contraindications: killed MJ
- Be cautious of: - C-sections; greyhounds (have slower recovery)
Discuss the indicationsand cautions of Ketamine
- Indications:
- Healthy dogs, cats, and horses
- Short procedures (IV injection)
Cautions:
- kidney diseased patients (kidney excretioin)
- Critically illl patients (catecholamine depleted)
- direct negative cardiac ionotropic effect
