Q

what is clinical mastitis?

A

presence of visibly abnormal milk
watery/thickened/discoloured w blood, pus, flakes or clots
udder: swollen, firm, redness, hot, firm, pain, reduced size latterly
cow normal to systemic ill (fever, dehydration, weakness, inappetence)

Q

what is subclin mastitis?

rapid mastitis test
herd test/milk test results
condutivity meter
identified by elevated milk APP & biochem changes in affected quarter

Q

chronic case of mastitis =?

A

long term recurring persistent cases of dx

17
Q

new case of subclin mastitis =?

A

increase from <200,000 SCC to >200,000 SCC

18
Q

what does >200,000 SCC indicate?

A

1 or more quarters infected

19
Q

chronic case of subclin mastitis =?

A

3 or more consecutive milk records w SCC >200,000cells/ml - ‘problem cows’

20
Q

transmission routes of mastitis?

A

haematogenous - infreq. e.g. Tb, lepto

teat canal - majority of pathogens

21
Q

RMT 0 =?

A

no gel/slime

SCC = <400,000 cells/ml

22
Q

RMT 1=?

A

a little slime

800,000 cells/ml SCC

23
Q

RMT 2=?

A

mod slime

2mil cells/ml SCC

24
Q

RMT 3=?

A

heavy slime

>2mil SCC

25
Q

define innate immunity?

A

predom defence in early stages of infection

26
Q

define specific immunity?

A

slower resp

recognises specific determinants of a pethogen
