Purpose of Clans
“Your clan is with you from the day you are born. It is said that your clan walks with you and looks after you. Your clan takes care of you so that you don’t have to go through life without help and protection. The spirit of your clan is for you to use because you are a member of that clan; you always offer tobacco when you ask your clan for help.”
The goal of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission was
to hear from the Indigenous people
who spent their childhoods in these schools so that their voices could be heard, and
reconciliation could begin.
Once the report was released, the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) and the Psychology
Foundation of Canada (PFC) formed
an Indigenous task force made up of leaders of Indigenous
communities and psychological service providers with the goal of developing specific and action-
orientated recommendations in delivering psychological services, including the development of
mental health programs and psychological assessment to the Inuit, Métis, and First Nations people in
Canada.
