Incontinence lecture notes Flashcards
What is incontinence?
Unintentional passing of urine
Where in brain controls storage/voiding phase
Pontine micturition centre
Who has no control of when voiding occurs?
Older age and non-potty trained children
What are the motor nerves involved in storage and voiding?
Pelvic nerve, hypogastric nerve and pudendal nerve
What kind of control does pelvic nerve provide?
Parasympathetic, bladder contraction
During bladder filling is sympathetic on or off?
Sympathetic (storage) on
Storage reflex:
Distension of bladder produces low-level bladder afferent firing of pelvic nerve
Triggers guarding reflex:
sympathetic outflow in the ______ nerve to bladder outlet
Pudendal outflow to external urethral sphincter
Sympathetic outflow also inhibits contraction of detrusor muscle
hypogastric nerve
Voiding reflex:
Intense bladder-afferent firing in pelvic nerve
Triggers s_______ reflex
Afferent signals passed to Periaqueductal Gray
Pontine micturition centre
PMC on/off switch
spinobulbospinal reflex
