What is the Equality Act 2010?
The Equality Act legally protects people from discrimination in the workplace and wider society
What are the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010?
- Age
- Disability
- Gender reassignment
- Marriage/civil partnership
- Pregnancy & maternity
- Race
- Religion or belief
What are the 6 Prohibited Acts of the Equality Act 2010?
- Direct discrimination - occurs when someone is favoured over you for no other reason than your protected characteristic
- Associative discrimination – associating with someone with a protected characteristic
- Perceptive discrimination – against an individual because hey think you have a protected characteristic
- Indirect discrimination – when rules apply to everyone but disadvantages people with a protected characteristic
- Harassment – intimidating, hostile environments for an individual
- Victimisation – singling out an individual
What is an inclusive environment?
This recognises and accommodates differences in the way people use the built and natural environment. It does not physically or socially separate, isolate. It welcomes diverse user needs
What do the Building Regs Part M state on inclusivity?
- Provides information about the ease of access to, and the use of, buildings e.g. ramps
- Safe height of doorways, ramps, cars, etc
What does the National Planning Policy Framework state on inclusive environments?
The NPPF promotes inclusive design and acknowledges diversity. At different stages of design, this should be taken into account
What are the principles of inclusive design?
- People at the heart of the process
- Acknowledge diversity and difference
- Offer choices
- Provide flexibility
- Buildings which are convenient and easy to enjoy
What have the RICS done to increase inclusivity and diversity?
The Bichard Review in 2022 asked RICS to improve diversity and inclusivity. The RICS created the NEW Rules of Conduct.
RICS stamp for the Employer Quality mark too which companies can apply for e.g. staff development, recruitment policy, retention

How do you source venues for national events?
Recently I sourced a venue for our champions forum. I chose a location which was accessible by public and private transport, the venue was step-free to enter, had 4 lifts, wheelchair access, accessible toilets on every floor. Assistance dogs are welcome.
How could you ensure the Carbon Literacy course was accessible?
- It did not need wifi connection
- Every student had an iPad
